Culpepper, Virginia.

November, 11, 1860.

Veterans Day doesn't exist yet.

"Well, the Amtrak Crescent is a northbound train. When you cain't afford to stay no more in New Orleans"

This train isn't bound for Richmond. It's bound for Washington. Abraham Lincoln just won and I am not happy.

Not because he is anti-slavery. Good! It's about time.

I am not happy because there is going to be a Civil War unless I can stop it.

However. We are getting our own country. And! the slaves shall be free.

"Same time, man I don't know you same time."

Next stop, Manassas.

Man ass ass. You'd think the English would have put more thought into their colonial town names back in 17whatever.

There won't be a Battle of Manassas. First or Second, if I can succeed while at the Capital. Capital with an A is for the town. With an O is for the building, which shall be "mine" in January, 2027.

The difficulty for me is gonna be getting the two things done at once.

Winning the "we are seceding" argument is easy. Getting my statesmen and the states men of the other 12 Confederate soon to be states to agree to free the slaves while doing it is the problem.

If they only knew what a cluster fuck they are going to make of "our country" if I don't stop them from declaring war before we're ready. And rather than that, how about no war?

Making that a goal is "half the battle. G.I. Joe!"

"But Alex," you might say "you might be able to win the war for the South since you're very good at military strategy. But there is no, way, you can convince those racist bastards to free their slaves except by the point of a bayonet."

That's true, so far as you went. But what if…

Well first of all I am going to prepare us, The South, for winning. THEN I WILL FREE THE SLAVES. then I will stop the war. In that order.

Because us losing did no one any good. How could it have been worse? It took 100 years after the war ended for everyone to be sort of equal, and another 50 for a descendent of slaves to become President. WAY TOO FUCKIN' LONG IN MY OPINION. Should been fixed in 1787 at the Convention I AM WORKING ON THAT TOO!

Just not this trip.

The thing is the Southerners who lost were unhappy, would be a way to say it. About losing. And took it out on the slaves, newly freed.

If they could have been convinced politically, by winning elections and changing people's minds, and freeing the slaves "off the record" (helping them escape without the Yankee troops), everything would have been a whole darn lot better.

I know so. If you can out discuss the Civil War era with me please, try.

Although I have no fuckin' idea how to convince anyone quickly to free the slaves.

Any more than I know how to convince anyone to house the homeless. All of them.

But it oughta be done. "Homestead the homeless," excuse me. A home is nice but the land around it to run around on is also important.

Sorry, back to 1860.

I can time travel. In my mind. I know enough about five eras of American life that I can method-act the part of an historical time traveling super-anti-hero.

It really feels, to me, as if I am heading to Washington D. C. in November, 1860.

It's fun. I play GAMES of life.

UPDATE!

Why are "black" girls more aggressive?

Is it me or them?

A girl whose culture probably included more danger than mine, unfortunately (although it seems to make braver girls) sat down at my table in the dining car. When there was an empty! booth right behind me.

Meanwhile girl I sat down across from is "interested" in me. She was paying attention to me when I was talking to my table mate. Who doesn't seem too excited to talk to me. Only to sit with me.

There is communication at a much more subtle level. Girls are aware. Boys not so much.

I am aware.

*****

I CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SHY GIRL WHO LIKES ME AND A GIRL WHO DOESN'T LIKE ME.

Really wish I could.
